Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production from tapioca industrial wastewater treatment: Influence of operating conditions on PHA content

چکیده
The aims of these experiments were treating tapioca processing waste water to produce polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) and removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The experiments were conducted in a sequencing batch reactor with a volume of 6 L. The entire experimental condition was anaerobic-aerobic-anaerobic. Experiment 1, 2 and 3 had the first 2 h for feeding time while Experiment 4 had 3 h. The 4 h between feeding time and settling time were variation of aeration time and without aeration. Experiment 1 had 2 h aeration time and 2 h without aeration. Experiment 2 has 1 h aeration and 3 h without aeration. Experiment 3 had 1 h interval alternating between aeration time and no aeration. Experiment 4 had 2 h aeration and 1 h no aeration. The first 6 h was mixing, the last 3 h was settling and draining time with total operating time 9 h. The experiments found that the average of PHA contents in Experiment 1, 2, 3, and 4 were -1 0.102, 0.043, 0.04, and 0.031 g PHA g MLSS (mixed liquor suspended solids), respectively. The -1 maximum value in Experiment 1 was 0.3 g PHA g MLSS. The average COD removal of experiment 1, 2, 3, and 4 was 26, 37, 23, and 18%, respectively. .

Influence of Different Culture Selection Methods on Polyhydroxyalkanoate Production at Short-term Biomass Enrichment
In this study, the potential of four different culture selection methods under short-term enrichment time (STE) to accumulate PHA-producing bacteria in mixed activated sludge was compared and the most efficient culture selection method was introduced. This means, PHA-producing microbial community was firstly enriched in a sequencing batch bioreactor (SBR) with four different selection methods i...
متن کاملProduction of polyhydroxyalkanoate during treatment of tomato cannery wastewater.
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production was achieved using tomato cannery waste coupled with a mixed microbial culture during wastewater treatment. The two-stage PHA production process comprised a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), operating under a periodic feast-famine regime, to accomplish simultaneously wastewater treatment and selection of PHA-accumulating microbes, followed by a batch reactor ...
متن کاملDetection of polyhydroxyalkanoate-accumulating bacteria from domestic wastewater treatment plant using highly sensitive PCR primers.
Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is a class of biodegradable plastics that have great potential applications in the near future. In this study, the micro-biodiversity and productivity of PHA-accumulating bacteria in activated sludge from a domestic wastewater treatment plant were investigated. A previously reported primer set and a selfdesigned primer set (phaCF1BO/phaCR2BO) were both used to amplify...
متن کاملPolyhydroxyalkanoate Production on Waste Water Treatment Plants: Process Scheme, Operating Conditions and Potential Analysis for German and European Municipal Waste Water Treatment Plants
This work describes the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) as a side stream process on a municipal waste water treatment plant (WWTP) and a subsequent analysis of the production potential in Germany and the European Union (EU). Therefore, tests with different types of sludge from a WWTP were investigated regarding their volatile fatty acids (VFA) production-potential. Afterwards, primary...
متن کاملEffect of polyhydroxyalkanoates on dark fermentative hydrogen production from waste activated sludge.
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), an intracellular energy and carbon storage polymer, can be accumulated in activated sludge in substantial quantities under wastewater dynamic treatment (i.e., substrate feast-famine) conditions. However, its influence on hydrogen production has never been investigated before. This study therefore evaluated the influences of PHA level and composition in waste activat...
